Yesterday, I flew into Austin. Wouldn’t you know the weekend I choose to start my cycling tour from Austin would be the beginning of one of the largest music festivals in the world. Fortunately, huge amounts of the visitors to the festival cycle. I’ve already met many very interesting people. Where? REI. OOdles of people who have just arrived for SXSW converge on REI.
When I arrived, I rented a car to do the many things I need to while I’m here. A wonderful couple from Warmshowers.org put me up last night even though they are leaving on their own epic tour (first bike tour) in just 3 days. They were close enough to REI for me to walk over and check on Ithak. My hosts and I chatted about touring, equipment, routes and many other cycling related subjects. The dinner prepared was fantastic and the company even better. Got a great night’s sleep, and we decided that we would enjoy cycling out together on Monday morning. I’m very blessed to have new friends cycling out with me, as my tour begins. I’ll meet my companion at Bastrop, tomorrow evening.
This morning, I drove to Boerne, TX. On my way out of Austin, I got a very good indication that I might be headed out on a long, straight stretch of highway when I glanced to my right and the guy in the lane next to me is reading his newspaper while driving!!!!!
Blue bonnets are in bloom. We walked River Walk and visited my childhood home. It’s been a great day with my baby brother.
Tomorrow morning, I’ve got to drive back to REI, drop off my trailer and all my belongings for the tour. Then drive the car back to the airport to drop it off, take a city bus back up to REI, and meet my friends to cycle out together by 11 am. Wish me luck!
Make your own breeze and remember: if you’re not having fun; you’re in the wrong gear.
